First, grab this phat pluging from Audio Damage called Rough Rider - its free and its bad-ass. Used by hit producers like Laidback Luke, Swedish House Mafia to name a few.
Lets assume you know what parallel compression is and know how to it up in your daw. Below is a good starting point for EDM based music.
Your daw should have 2 busses – DRY and WET. Both Busses should have the Rough Rider plugin.
Dry channel should have the Rough Rider plugin turned off.
Use below settings on the Wet Buss (Rough Rider Plugin):
- Attack: 0.05ms
- Release: 15ms
- Ratio: 12
- Threshold: -30dB
Ride the WET fader up (blend) until it sounds right. The effect should make your drums sound, tight, louder and pump. Usually in Dance music, Kick-Drum, Snares and Hi-Hats are all grouped together in 1 Buss. You can take it a step further and sub-group (hi-hats) before hitting the P.Compression Buss.
Play with the release times/attack settings for a different effect if your producing non-dance music.
