Twitter, Facebook, Ustream – the list goes on and on. Social media marketing and the ever popular, ring tones is changing the face of the music industry. The game has changed. If you don’t have a hit single, than you probably will not survive much longer or if at all in the current state of the music industry. The role technology has played itself with music in the last 10 years increased the competition by 100 fold and ultimately gave rise to the “Singles” market.
It is a singles game people. The value of an “album” has diminished in recent years in favor of ringtones and mp3 downloads. Consumers have a choice like never before to choose the songs they want to buy (or illegally download).
The question you want to ask yourself if your in the music industry – do I stop what I am doing now and concentrate on singles? I could answer your question from all sides of the spectrum but it would take longer than what a blog post should be Me personally, I’d stick with releasing singles.
If you case study the fast rise of Justin Bieber, LMFAO and others, they collectively have hit singles that resonate with partying, drinking and going out. If you do not have catchy songs that fall in the Big 3 categories listed above; than you will have a hard time earning fans at the pace the artists above received.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all for rich lyrics. I got my first hit writing a compelling song for RDB (Dil Karda) and currently wrapping up my single “Aja Mahi” which is a beautiful, classic ever-green Punjabi love song. However after Aja Mahi, I already have a song ready to go called “Drink like a St*R” – Aimed straight at the consumers that love to do what: party, drink and go out.
Listen, the album isn’t going to necessarily die any time soon nor are the sales of beautiful songs going to diminish. Well written songs and complete albums have a place in this world to create a musical balance. The same consumers that want the party songs, want love songs. As of right now, the way to get yourself positioned to instantly gain fans and kick start your musical career is writing and producing songs that talk about: drinking, paryting and going out. Once your at the top and have a solid fan base, you can release what your heart desires and your fans; being your die hard fans, will still support it.
